A colonoscopy is a tool used to diagnose issues of the colon. With a lighted tube called an “endoscope”, our doctors are able to view the large intestine in its entirety, in detail, one small section at a time. This procedure is used to screen for certain cancers and also treat colon-related issues, such as ulcers and bleeding.
As with any delicate or potentially embarrassing procedure, our trained staff is dedicated to making you as comfortable as possible. We accomplish this partly through education, making sure you are prepared for your procedure and know what to expect.
In addition to allowing visualization of the internal colon, the colonoscope enables the physician to irrigate, suction, inject air and access the bowel with surgical instruments. During a colonoscopy, the physician may remove tissue and/or polyps for further examination and possibly treat any problems that are discovered.
