Catherine Thomas is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. She received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama, where she continued her education, obtaining a master's in speech-language pathology. Catherine has practiced speech pathology in numerous settings, including public and private schools, outpatient clinics, skilled nursing facilities and hospital acute care. Catherine has maintained a diverse skill set, working in settings that have allowed her to treat both adults and pediatric patients.
She believes in the value of collaborating with parents and caregivers for language growth and has been given the opportunity to educate family members, specifically in the areas of autism spectrum disorder and social/pragmatic disorders to promote parent/caregiver-led intervention. She is also trained in oral-placement therapy, which aims to target underlying weakness or motor coordination deficits relating to speech sound production disorders. Catherine has received certification in fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, as well as the modified barium swallow impairment protocol for videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing.
In 2021, she was able to establish and implement a protocol for Medical Center Enterprise to promote placement and treatment with speaking and swallowing valves for inpatients with tracheostomy. She continues to use her training and skills to treat both pediatric and adult populations in the following areas: articulation, motor speech disorders, dysarthria, feeding/swallowing, receptive and expressive language delay, social pragmatic disorder, voice disorder and cognitive communication disorder. One of her favorite aspects of practicing at Medical Center Enterprise is having the opportunity to serve and advocate for the families in her hometown.
